Participating in “My First Game Jam”

Found this game jam on twitter and thought it looked interesting, I’ll be recording my progress and production process here so watch this space!

Ever since Jonny Blackburn at Dubit recommended Twine to me as a game making platform I have “planned to get around to eventually looking into giving learning it a try” (my attitude to most things these days). If you don’t know, Twine is a software package for making text-based games and interactive fiction which requires little to no programming knowledge. As Anna Anthropy said:

“And aside from being free, it’s really not programming at all — if you can write a story, you can make a Twine game.”

So the plan is to play and analyse some Twine-made games to get some inspiration and see what people are currently doing with the tool. I’ll try to stick to games that are freely accessible in case anyone wants to follow along with me. Once that’s done I’ll get to making plans for my own project in time for the start of the jam on January 2nd. There’s two whole weeks of development time for this jam so I’m saving any actual work in Twine until then for authenticity. I want to see if I can learn how to use Twine, design and build a whole game within the time limit. Should be achievable (touch wood). Wish me luck!
